custom portraits

Hello, lovelies! I have just started taking commissions for custom portraits of your pet or human. These examples were done in my sketchbook.
I will work with your provided digital image(s) to create an original ink + mixed media drawing of your loved one(s) on 6x8 paper, suitable for framing.

in the fever of november

Here are a couple of works in progress and a finished piece I recently did. I've been meaning to experiment with cut paper for ages and I'm excited to finally have started a piece!
I've recently begun a feverish frenzy of drawing because I'm determined to have a portfolio I'm proud of by the end of the year. I'm one of those people who shuns New Year goals because I am constantly revisiting them throughout the year. It seems like whenever the new year rolls around, I've just made all my resolutions and so there's no need. But today was sort of a no good, very bad day for drawing. I know every artist experiences this, but it doesn't make it any prettier. Usually faces don't give me any problems, but today it was erase, re-draw, erase, re-draw, erase, re-draw, and it was so frustrating that a simple, tiny little face kept giving me such hell! Then, I went to put the girl to ink and I screwed it up within seconds! So, onto me feeling worthless as a person, as an artist and asking myself - what the hell am I doing? What is the point of all this?? I know, of course, what the point is - art makes me happy, it's that simple. But also, it makes other people happy. And that's all I really want to do. Whether it's with what I write, film or draw, I just want to bring a sort of light into the world. I know how I feel when I look at someone else's art that moves me and all I want is to be able to do the same.

lately

What I've been up to lately...
I told myself right before I moved that I need to build up my portfolio of illustration/drawings. I had too many unfinished drawings lying about because I had been focusing on photography and finishing my book. And, so, this is what I've been up to.
I have many more in-progress shots on my instagram, come take a look!

new pendants

Because I’m moving in TWO DAYS, I haven't had time for blogging.... however, I did find some time to make and fire a couple of silver pendants. I’m using silver clay, which is just that: clay made up of silver. You can form and build objects, kneading and such, just as if it were real clay. Then, when it's fired, it becomes pure silver (unlike sterling which has copper in it).
The one on the right is a lotus flower, the other is a solar eclipse. Both have symbolic meaning that has to do with change, growth, rebirth, and transformation. I wanted to give them the look of old coins excavated from an archaeological site or somehow old, handcrafted and imperfect. I find more beauty in imperfections and flaws than I do exactness and precision. They will appear in my shop after I get settled in. Enjoy!

day in the life

This set of photos was from a roll of film I had in my camera for ages. When I went to develop, it fought me every step of the way, falling on the floor a couple of times as well, which is why they're so dirty. I need to actually wash them again to make them look 'normal'. Gives 'em character, anyway.

abstract vase

I made this vase a few months ago and I really love the way it came out. It’s in my shop now waiting for someone to take this little beauty home! I hand built it with white stoneware, painted it with underglazes, then gave it a clear glaze. It's functional and can be used as a vase, but it's also gorgeous on its own. Hope youlike!

chimerical jars

Tiny chimerical jars for sale in my shop! These are made with B-mix (white clay that has quite a bit of porcelain in it). But notice the color isn't white, it's more of an buttery cream color. Both of these are hand built and carved with sgrafitto technique, underglazed and brushed lightly with a clear glaze.

blur in my reality

A series of photos taken circa 2012. As I wrote earlier, I'll be moving soon... Does anyone else obsess over decorating and furniture placement? hahaha, I already know the answer to that!

outtakes

Nila, a few outtakes I didn't use for my series.
And while this has nothing to do with it, I must give a happy birthday to one of my dearest friends who passed away last year. I will write a blog post about her, because she was one of my favorite people ever.

Nila in color

These photos are an outtake of a series I did about a girl, Nila. It's sort of a day in the life... I thought I would mix color with black and white, using color to describe certain moods, but I found I liked the black and white better all by itself. So the final series is all black and white, done in the darkroom. I haven't actually scanned any of those negatives except as a contact sheet which is at a low res and all filled with dust marks. You can see some of them on my flickr  and tumblr.

change of scenery

Here are some Instax pictures. hmm, maybe next time I'll use my good scanner...These pictures actually aren't very new, but I've decided to start archiving my photos. This also isn't my first blog. I started one about a hundred years ago, ditched it, then started another and ditched that (sort of). The second one was an accidental ditch, but no es importante. The important thing IS that I'm starting fresh! I have so many photos I want to share, so many thoughts, so many experiences, that I want to do it diary-like in this lovely atmosphere of blogging. I had been (still am) using Tumblr, but that site is a bit strange and...well, strange. I didn't feel comfortable writing anything there, I just sort of posted images, looked around and left. I do the same thing on Facebook - I'm just not a natural at social networking, I guess. (Which is funny, because I'm so gregarious and charming in person! hahahaaha!!)
Anyway, here I am again and this time I'm going to stay.Anyone who followed me before or who knows me at all knows I'm writing a book - a young adult novel. Well, I've finished it, for the THIRD time (all of them completely different books, yet with the same concept and protagonist). And now, once again, I am in editing mode which is tedious, but OH so needed!! So now I have started a sweet, new blog filled with all sorts of goodies. I'm especially excited about this because I'm going to be moving soon - after six years of being in the same place - and I'm so delighted for this change! I'm in the middle of purging my belongings which feels strangely wonderful. And you know what's weird? I actually like moving. When I was a child, I stayed in the same house all my life until I moved out at 18. I was actually jealous of kids who moved around a lot! Now I realize how silly that is, how lucky I was... but I still like moving. It's all about a change of scenery.
